One of the things that I enjoy the most is reading, but I have very little free time, so I started to look into the concept of speed reading. Since I was on a quest to improve my reading speed,I thought it would make sense to find a system that wouldn't only increase my reading speed, but also be able to commit all that I read to memory. Not only was I looking to increase my reading speed, I was also searching for a method to increase reading comprehension.

I started to look into different speed reading courses and found that they talked about increasing reading speed, but didn't talk much about how to increase reading comprehension. Initially, reading faster was my main focus as I wanted to read as much as my free time would allow. I had gotten into both political and self help reading, and these subjects demanded a better comprehension of what I was reading. After doing some research on the internet through a Google search, I learned that the concept of speed reading is really a collection of reading methods designed to increase reading speed, that don't negatively effect reading comprehension or retention.After my research, I decided to try an online speed reading training course.

I studied the course for about one week, what I found is that speed reading is not only useful in reading for pleasure but is absolutely necessary when used in learning and studying. I learned that speed reading is a composite of skills which include learning how to 'see' the words rather than inwardly vocalize them. The speed reading concept was taking quite a bit of work to break the habit of saying the word silently as I read it.

When I began to notice that my reading and comprehension were improving, I became even more interested. I went back to Google and did some more research. I found a course that took speed reading further and talked about a concept called "mental photography." I had no idea what "mental photography" was, but I was intrigued.

I found that "mental photography" is the ability to recall images with vividness bordering on actual visual perception. You see, most people only scratch the surface of what the brain can do, and only use 2% of its capacity. If you can tap into the other 98%, the brain can do incredible things. Skeptics on the other hand, claim that no matter what techniques you're taught, you can't develop anything close to a photographic memory.

There was strong debate on both sides of the issue, but I decided that I had nothing to lose and bought the course. The concepts and theories in the course are truly ground breaking. It was like I was actually learning to program my brain. I can now retain an amazing amount of information. Reading comprehension is so much easier.

It is funny to look back and this all started with searching for a speed reading course, and ended up with life changing experience. Speed reading just comes along with it as an added bonus, even though the methods involved with normal speed reading are quite different. I am so happy that I was able to get past my skepticism because I am living proof that this concept works.. Now, if I can just get my three kids to pick up more books and play fewer video games.
